Who are we?
The Anglican Church of Luxembourg (an English-Speaking Church) is made up of people of all ages from many different nations and very different backgrounds. Our worship and activities are in English, but our members speak many other languages. In all that we do we try to express the depth and diversity of the Christian spiritual tradition so that we can offer a welcome to all.
part of the Anglican Communion
We are part of the world-wide Anglican Communion, a congregation of the Church of England's Diocese in Europe which extends from the Canary Islands to Moscow; a vast family of congregations embracing many climates and cultures. The Anglican tradition is very broad, and that enables people of very different Christian denominations to make a spiritual home with us.
in Luxembourg since 1956
The English-Speaking Church Community in Luxembourg (Anglican Chaplaincy), the original name, was founded by a small group in 1956. Since the 1970's we have worshipped at the Konvikt Chapel (konvikt means a seminary). The clergy, or chaplains as they are called, also teach religion in the English section of the European School, in addition to bearing the pastoral responsibility for the congregation.
What do we do ?
worship
Our Sunday morning worship is centered around Holy Communion. Christians of all denominations, who receive Communion in their own tradition, are welcome to share the consecrated bread and wine with us. Everyone is welcome to come to the altar for a blessing. Our Sunday worship is supported and enhanced by a choir of about fifteen people. The choir is affiliated to the Royal School of Church Music.
social events
Sunday worship is also an occasion to meet other people. After the service coffee and tea are served, time to share the stories of the week and to meet new friends. On the last Sunday of the month we organise a simple lunch in a local restaurant, and throughout the year many other events also take place, the highlight of which is the Church Fair in June.
support
We all find that life is not always easy, especially in a foreign country. In particular, relocating is one of the most stressful things in anyone's life. Our church is a place where people find a lot of mutual support in times of trial. The Chaplains are, of course, always available to everybody, not only within the church but also the wider community. In addition, several Church Council members will do their best to help with questions that newcomers may have about the practical aspects of living in Luxembourg. You can contact them by email or telephone as follows: Philippa Seymour tel 35 90 97 Catherine Allen tel 33 34 57 John Overstall tel 33 96 71 Chris Vaudrey tel 2363 0035
activities for children and young people
Our community contains a lot of young families, so catering for babies, children and teenagers is a priority for us. Every Sunday at the 11am service there is a crèche and a programme of activities for the young.
prayer & study
Prayer is the foundation of a life of faith; in prayer we find the energy to live life according to God's purpose. Through prayer groups and Bible study groups we hope that everyone in our congregation can deepen their spiritual life and understanding. Look out for details of our regular meetings.
concern for the wider world
We support many charities and missions within Luxembourg and the wider world. We give at least 10% of our total income to charity, including the entire proceeds of our annual Church Fair, in addition to occasional special appeals for particular causes.
